Artist Statement
What drives my work as an artist is creating items for peoples homes that feel joyful and meaningful to them. Mass produced items have become a standard in the everyday home. I hope through my designs and craft, I can put my art into the world for homes to feel authentic. As a multimedia artist and designer, I explore how functional objects can be artistically made to create a lively and sophisticated space. My designs stem from wanting to make a space inviting, and comforting. I work in a variety of mediums, primarily glass and wood, as they are materials that can be recycled and broken down easily. I find both mediums to be fragile, yet structural.
In the furniture work that I create, I am inspired by mid-century modern style furniture. The organic and soft edges within my furniture, similar to that of mid century furniture, creates visual pathways that invite people in. Growing up, I was also inspired by how my family and I would build items together for our own home that I was proud to show off when people would visit. Loft beds, tree houses, garden decorations, and double porch swings, not only brought other people joy, but it brought me and my family joy making it together. Furniture is a mode of bringing people together and making memories. Community is important to me, and inspires how I design.
Curiosity is often the foundation of any project I create. My process starts by exploring a new material or concept. The body of my work is furniture, but I like to express my creativity in other forms of art such as painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, ceramic work, and textiles. I am passionate about exploring themes of sustainability, and community. I focus on using repurposed materials, and consider the lifetime of my art. I am mindful of how people will engage with my work. I make art with the intent for people to enjoy with others.
I consider my work to be refined, handcrafted, and meaningful. There is a preciousness about owning something handmade and not mass produced. I form the concept for each of my pieces around how it will be worthy of becoming someone’s cherish-able item. I create art to be a reason a person's home feels unique to them.
